During this time, Ella visits him both in person and psychically, constantly using her powers to offer him glimpses of freedom and life outside the prison walls and lead him on a path toward a revolutionary future as, in the outside world, incidents of police brutality rise and their mother’s health fails. ' Riot Baby, Onyebuchi's first novel for adults, is as much the story of Ella and her brother, Kevin, as it is the story of black pain in America, of the extent and lineage of police brutality, racism and injustice in this country, written in prose as searing and precise as hot diamonds. As a teenager in New York, Kev is brutally assaulted by police and arrested for no crime but being black he spends the next eight years incarcerated at Rikers. The “Riot Baby,” Kev, is born in 1992 Los Angeles, just hours after the courts acquitted the cops that beat Rodney King and the city erupted in violence. Ella Jackson and her baby brother, Kev, are both preternaturally gifted. Onyebuchi ( War Girls) paints a grim, dystopian portrait of contemporary America shot through with elements of the supernatural in this urgent, brutal work. 'Tochi Onyebuchi is, primarily, a generous world-builder. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's no secret that I am a Hope Ford fan (I'd probably give her grocery lists five stars) but I was get a little nervous when it comes to big collaborative series like this. The last couple of letters, addressed just to his youngest child, Priscilla, by this time, are quite poignant. The Letters do continue themes from one year to the next and the characters are likeable, funny and have their own personalities. The Letters were never intended for publication and it's a testament to Tolkien's remarkable skill at storytelling that simply collecting them together makes such a delightful book. Reading this as an adult, what comes across most strongly is Tolkien's love and affection for his children (which is, of course, what one would expect of all parents for their children, but which sadly is not always so) and his delight in writing and drawing these little Christmas stories each year.ĭue to the very young age of his eldest son when the first letter was written in 1920, these early missives are very short, but in 1925 we get a longer message which introduces us to the North Polar Bear, who will feature every year thereafter, and a beautiful little painting of the NPB wrecking the North Pole itself, smashing Father Christmas's house, and a picture of the new house that he builds to replace it. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments Fast Pitch by Nic Stone![]() ![]() ![]() I was in third grade when “The Sandlot” came out and by then we used to spend summers playing baseball in my grandma’s backyard, not even using an actual bat. ![]() The following is a conversation with Stone, edited for length and clarity.ĭid your love of “The Sandlot” lead you to softball, or was it the other way around? It was her own experience, coupled with her love of “The Sandlot” and her desire to see more stories about Black female athletes that inspired her to write the book. “Something that I’ve learned since writing the book is that we are here, we just don’t cross paths very often,” she said. In her own ball-playing days, Stone was always the only Black girl on her team. Shenice takes it upon herself to clear his name - while trying to lead her team to a state championship. The accusation dashed his hopes to be among the first Black men to play Major League Baseball. One day, she discovers a family secret - her great-grandfather was falsely accused of stealing a glove that once belonged to Joe DiMaggio. Shenice comes from a long line of ballplayers, going back to her great-grandfather, who played in the Negro Leagues.
